NZ-qualified Plumbers and Drainlayers with four years full-time experience can apply to the PGDB to have skills assessed against the Level 4 qualification — a fast track into the role. International workers should get an NZQA International Qualification Assessment first. Skills cross over from construction, civil and drainage trades.

If you liked science labs at school, this is essentially running a very large one.
Career switchers. Science, food processing, manufacturing and lab technician backgrounds transfer directly into this role. Many mid-career switchers reach senior operator level within two years. NZQA International Qualification Assessment is required for overseas workers. Careers here are extremely stable — many workers spend their entire career in the water treatment sector.

Career switchers. International BE degrees are recognised via the Washington Accord — check through the International Engineering Alliance and get a credential assessment from Engineering New Zealand. Civil, mechanical and environmental engineering backgrounds all transfer well into water sector engineering. Many engineers enter the water sector from construction or consulting firms seeking more stable, mission-driven work.
